We are very rarely willing to admit to a shoe fault, but yesterday we may have taken a misstep. I’ll blame it on the illness; a fever frying my brain and hot flashes can make you do some crazy things. Yesterday morning, shoedish woke up at 4:30am and could not return to sleep. After lying in bed for the next two and half hours we decided to get up and get ready for the day. At 7:15 I was done curling my hair and applying my mascara and I still had two hours and 15 minutes before class started. I looked like crap, one of those days when no matter what you do you’ll look like crap. So, I decided to remedy this by wearing something super cute. A sweater dress, opaque tights, and 4-inch stilettos later I left for class. Yes, this is what I wore to Spanish class on a Tuesday morning in Barcelona. After class I met a friend for lunch and then we walked around for the next 6 hours. Compounded by the fact that I was wearing a sweater dress and black tights in 70 degree weather was those 4-inch stilettos. Over cobblestone streets for 6 hours? Even shoedish doesn’t recommend that. Forget my feet, I almost destroyed the pour heels of those precious shoes. I can walk in anything…but that doesn’t mean that I should. Shoedish already suffered the loss of one pair of shoes due to broken heel syndrome, we’d die if we lost another sole. In the future, we’ll wear more appropriate hiking footwear like these t-strap sandals from Tory Burch. City cute but excessive-walking appropriate.

Shoedish received an email recently asking how the contemporary woman can wear the Fall 2008 trends?
“Dear Shoedish, I am a 33-year old women working in corporate law and I’m curious about how a contemporary woman, such as myself, can wear the new trends for Fall 2008? I fee like recent trends have been increasingly focussed on “bling” and glitz, which for a woman in my line of work can find difficult to incorporate. My wardrobe is a black hole of standard business attire and I know there must be a way out. How can these new trends translate to the contemporary women?”
At first I was confused by the tag “contemporary women?” When I think of contemporary women I think of women who aren’t tied down by fashion rules. Are women still fighting that double-standard? It’s silly, really, that red snakeskin stilettos can exceed your academic and business status, but since that seems to still be the case, here’s what shoedish thinks. Fall 2008 is all about accessories and embellishment when it comes to your footwear. This is how trends grow; the remnants of old trends attach themselves to new trends until they build until a fully monopolized look. Color blocking, lace, rhinestones, and embroidery are the trends to follow for Fall 2008 and while these can be gaudy, they can also be feminine, simple, and cute. Pick your accessories carefully. Where a young college student successfully wears a gaudy piece of artwork on her feet, you take one element from that same painting and wear it hard. Think of it the way designers do. Runway vs ready-to-wear. A little bling here - red color blocks on an all-black pump or a some flowery embroidery on the heel - is all you need to stay on trend. It’s the little elements, after all, that make truly gorgeous shoes. Starting today and continuing all next week, we’re going to shoe you a few runway (business appropriate) vs ready-to-wear (the younger crowd on a Saturday night on the town) examples.
The eccentric flame heel from Pierre Hardy vs…stay tuned for the contemporary version.
