ask shoedish: socks with sandals trend

ask-shoedish-trend-allert.jpg

“A big hello from North Carolina shoedish! My coworkers and I love The Shoe Dish and spend a large part of our morning reading and discussing. We almost always agree with what you have to say, but have found ourselves split recently over this whole sock sandal, peep-toe tights trend. You seem to be a supporter and we’d love to hear how you negotiate this look. Thanks from your shoe friends in NC!”

Thanks for the email my NC shoe friends! Let me start by saying that it isn’t difficult for me to negotiate or rationalize something. If I like it, I wear it, if I don’t, I don’t. The beauty of fashion, especially shoe fashion, is that you don’t have to conform to the majority opinion. If you don’t like socks with sandals (and we’re not talking tube socks with Birkenstocks here) you don’t have to. At the end of the day, it’s just a trend, and you don’t have to follow all the trends. But, just for arguments sake I’ll play the part of the sock lobbyist. The reason I think that socks with sandals are a justifiable trend for shoe lovers (and we’ll thrown opaque tights with peep-toes into the mix as well) is that a sock, if worn correctly, is merely an extension of the shoe. A sock is just another piece of pliable material, like the fabric of a tennis shoe or the leather of a buckle. Peep-toe booties, for example, are a huge trend right now - the prologue to capped toed shoes - and if you wear them with colored tights, you’ve created a new kind of capped-toe shoe. Innovation and creativity! Socks with sandals are a another kind of “innovative shoe”. A mini-dress with a platform sandal is sexy, a mini-dress with a bootie is hip, a mini-dress with a sandal made into an innovative type of bootie by the wearing of a sock is funky, trendy, and hot. There is no doubt that wearing socks with sandals can be tricky. But, the main reason for this is that we’re trained to believe that this isn’t how a sandal should be worn. Why? What shoe rule book says that you can’t create an entirely different shoe by adding a sock? Isn’t personality and style, after all, the very basis of fashion?

the real “hollywould”

Originally uploaded by shoedish

Last week we learned of Heidi Montag’s new trashy cheap clothing line for Anchor Blue and were appalled. To make matters worse, Heid’s brand adopted an even trashier element of copying, calling the collection “Heidiwood”. We gasp! We protest! One of shoedish’s favorite designer labels just happens to be Hollywould, and we would never in a million years want someone - especially fame whore reality show personalities - to get any publicity from riding the coattails of designers who actually deserve it. We realize that by writing this we’re giving HM publicity, but we just have to give the true “Hollywood” designer some props. These new summer white platform sandals from Hollywould deserve all the attention in the world. Complete with some an attention-grabbing chain t-strap details, these heels are all bling and no ding. Get to Hollywould now for more summer sandals and true designer duds!

crocs.jpg

The folks at Crocs have quickly pulled ahead of all their competitors. Other closed foam ‘comfy shoe’ companies have jumped aboard the market that Crocs created so successfully, but Crocs is staying ahead leaps and bounds ahead. With three new collections of footwear and accessories launching this summer and fall Crocs shoes no signs of slowing down any time soon. Crocs has partners with Disney to bring new styles of Croc Footwear to its children’s and junior’s lines. The new collections are inspired by the popular Disney productions “Hannah Montana,” “High School Musical,” and the upcoming Disney Pixar film “Wall-E.” Crocs has its eye on the prize. The prize being the May debut of one of the most marketable personalities to date, Hannah Montana. The “Hannah Montana” themed Mary Jane-style Crocs come embellished with glitter and graphic art. Come fall, Crocs will add to the “Hannah Montana” collection to their Mammoth Crocs shoe style, which is lined with synthetic fur.

snake print sandals from pour la victoire

The smooth and neutral leather of the straps are a sleek contrast to the metallic embellishments. This t-strap flat from Pour La Victoire has a gaudy presence, but is surprisingly tame at the same time. You know snakes, though, they’re wicked and tricky little guys.

*These slithering t-strap sandals are also available in pink from Pour La Victoire. Both styles are available at Nordstom for $159.95.

grunge is back: dr. marten boots get a makeover

I remember my first pair of Dr. Marten’s. They were navy blue ankle boots that I shoe-brat-begged my mom to buy me as part of my annual back-to-school wardrobe. I was a sophomore in high school. I wore them twice. Momma Shoedish was not pleased, to say the least, and when I graduated and moved out of the house she couldn’t bare to part with those steel-toed clunkers that had cost more than a pretty penny. Last Christmas, she pulled them from the back of her closet and handed them over. Dr. Marten’s, I told her, were making a comeback after all and mine were “vintage” (except for the fact that they’d barely been worn). They were so new in fact, that I got a blister on my heel the first time I wore them back in New York. That blister was confirmation of what a spoiled shoe brat I was, even in my youth. Sorry mom! Anyhow, DM’s and various other steel-toed boots are back and they’ve received a pleasant makeover! The sonic youth have cried out and Beta Shoes, Triple 5 Soul, Groove, London Underground, and Sugar have answered the call. We wouldn’t have called these boots “grunge” back in the day, but I guess that’s their typical category. At any rate, they’ve cleaned up for 2008. With bright colors, metallics, and feminine embellishments, the “grunge of the 90s” is now the hip funk neo gap-grunge of the new millennium.

groove.jpg

The neutral metallic of these boots from Groove are “So Awesome” we’re considering spray-painting our own DM boots. This solid palette is the perfect compliment to the figured and plaid materials of this season’s upcoming grunge revival trend.

sugar.jpg

You can always count on Sugar to take something sweet and make it even sweeter. They’ve played with the boot to give it a girly wedge, girly bright color, and girly animal print. Sweet enough for you?

triple-5-soul.jpg

And Triple 5 Soul takes the new millenium grunge a step further with this asro-chic futuristic boot. This sneaker boot isn’t for everyone, but isn’t that the beauty of it.
