ask shoedish: you by crocs

Originally uploaded by shoedish

The Shoe Dish reader, Meg, asked us what we thought of the YOU by Crocs collection. The shoes in question are these pretty, green, pumps from their spring collection. Our response is below, but we thought we’d open it up to readers. Anyone have these or another shoe from the YOU collection? Or do you just have a general opinion on Crocs? We’d love to hear your thoughts.

Meg: “Hi, My friend came home from Colorado wearing You’s green venice heels. She claims they are comfortable, they looked cute with her jeans on, but I am hesitant! I had to share with some of my fave shoe blogs to see if any had actually tried them?!”

Shoedish: As much as we despise the look of the original Croc, we do understand its mass appeal. If we were going on a three month sailing expedition or lived 6 months of the year at our grandparents cabin in the willy wacks of Maine, we might (might!) consider buying them, but for absolutely no other reason than the two listed above.

However, when it comes to the You Collection, we must admit that we’ve been rather impressed. Who knew that the creators of the modern boat shoe would have it in them to design a line of trend conscious footwear? Emerald green, patent, round-toe, mary jane, and a slingback? What’s not to like? We’re very stubborn, but even we can understand why you’d be feeling a slight pull. They’re cute, we admit. We probably won’t be running out to buy them, they still seem a bit expensive for a cookie cutter girly chic pump, but we approve wholeheartedly none-the-less. Just promise you won’t get sucked into buying the original boat shoe Croc (or if you do, don’t tell us about it :))

The summer collection, particularly the gladiator sandals (which are named after our favorite Greek island) aren’t bad either. We’d steer clear of the wedges, though, they look like the products of a serious miscommunication between designers.

marc jacobs reverse heel

Marc Jacobs is constantly creating unique and funky footwear for the modern shoe lover. In fact, MJ can be credited with bringing back the mary jane and taking it from school girl chic to fashion elite. Now he’s jumped aboard the heel love trend and made some seriously strange heels for his pumps. We’re not quite sure how we feel about this look. It’s certainly different; it’s definitely unique? Would you rock shoes with heels that are horizontal to the floor? It sort of defeats the purpose of a stiletto…or does it? I guess that you’re still getting the height, perpendicular stiletto or not. Parker Posey was one of the first celebs to be spotted in the reverse-heel from Marc Jacobs and Vicky B likes them too.

fornarina, blue suede bootie

Originally uploaded by shoedish

Hmmm, looks like Fornarina is taking the history of the blue suede shoe and making it uniquely theirs. These ‘Arlette’ booties from Fornarina are taking the menswear trends of 2007 - tapered heels and spectator shapes - and adding them to the pop color revolution and reinvention of suede in couture footwear. We’re not huge fans of this shoe from the side. There is something about the tapered heel and pointy toe that makes it all seem a little awkward (though it could be that terrible aversion we have to the pointy toe in all styes of footwear), but we’re loving the color and spectator shoes (femme fatale) has always shared a special nook in our black little shoe heart.

designer challenge: knockoffs from steve madden

sm-dior-knockoff.jpgsm-ysl-knockoff.jpg

It was only a matter of time until Stevie Boy jumped on the ‘It’ shoe knockoff train. We’ve shown you the Balenciaga knockoffs, but here’s both the YSL Tribute t-strap sandals and the Dior extreme cut-out knockoff versions for Steve Madden. These are pretty nice looking copies, but other knockoff sources, namely Bakers, have nice copycats for a fraction of the price.

purple shoe power from boutique 9

Originally uploaded by shoedish

The shoe theme for this week is purple. Ever since shoedish overcame her fear of this pretty color, we’ve been obsessed with it (almost as obsessed as our green obsession, but with slightly less fervor). Why, oh why you might ask…or what, oh what has caused shoedish to purple-theme a random week in May? Well, we were having a talk with our good friend JS in Sac Town, courtesy of Skype, when we learned the JS is daydreaming (finally) about her wedding day and has been imagining her bridesmaids in purple.

JS: How do feel about purple?
SD: I can do purple.
JS: You’d wear a purple dress?
SD: I’ll wear whatever you tell me to wear. Er, except a chiffon tutu. Well, I guess I could wear a chiffon tutu if you really wanted me to.

Now, I am not the pretty prom, dye-your-shoes-to-match-your-dress, kind of girl. I would never ever, ever ever ever wear purple shoes with a purple dress, but talking to JS about purple dresses got me thinking about my own purple collection and shoedish suddenly realized that she only owns one pair of purple shoes and they’re dressy sandals, which don’t serve a purpose in my everyday life. This is a travesty that must be remedied immediately. These pretty medium-point t-straps from Boutique 9 would help. We’d like them better if they didn’t have the pointy toe, but otherwise they’re great!

This week’s Celebrity Shoe Star is the next big thing in supermodel and celebrity. If Andy Warhol were alive today, she would most certainly be his muse. From serving fish and chips to runway model obscurity, this pretty face, the next Kate Moss and Edie Sedgwick (though we hope with slightly less negative attention) has quickly become the famous face of the socialite. Can you guess? Whose Shoes…
