Here’s something new and different for all your fashion forward females…er, something like that. We were visiting our sole sisters over at Shoeminx when we came across this(what’s a good word to describe them?) new style from Martin Margiela. Shoeminx says, “Martin Margiela, the Keyser Soze of the fashion world, has clearly spent WAY too much time living off the grid. The avant-garde designer used jikatabi, the split-toe socks worn with kimonos, as the inspiration for his heeled “tabi shoes” like SJP’s split-toe pump since 1988. Since then, Margiela has featured variations of his signature tabi theme in his Maison Martin Margiela collection. The centuries old style is all the rage among the terminally chic in Europe and Asia. Yes, they’re very much a statement item and yes, it takes guts to wear them. Margiela may call it “experimental deconstruction,” we call it a toe wedgie. So now women have a new worry; first underwear wedgies, now this.” Available in both ballerina flat and stiletto styles, we’ll just have to wait and see how this trend moves along. Thoughts?

Will your holiday shopping be effected by the economy? “Current financial pressures and a lack of confidence in the economy will force shoppers to be very conservative in their holiday spending,” said National Retail Federation chief economist, Rosalind Wells, in a recent statement. “We expect consumers to be very frugal this season and less willing to splurge on discretionary items.” The NRF predicted that there will be a meager 2.2 % increase in the 2008 holiday shopping season. This will mark the lowest in holiday sales growth since 2002. Holiday sales growth usually averages around the 4.4% mark. Economic strife and the housing crisis, along with growing unemployment rates and high food and energy costs are what lead to the below average predictions.

Nicholas Kirkwood graced the catwalks for Spring 2009 on Rodarte’s hard core catwalk and shoedish liked what she saw. While these decadent overembellished shoes could be dangerous - model Abbey Lee took a minor spill while walking the runway in them - they’re pretty freakin’ awesome none-the-less! Nicholas Kirkwood shares intimate space with Alejandro Ingelmo on the new cover of Footwear News and from the looks of it modernized clogs are back for Spring 2009. We’ve never been huge fans of the clog - we did have these uber funky, adidas-striped, black pair that we bought in Florence when we were about 15 - but both these gold-plated peeps are working hard at changing our fickle shoe minds. From Ingelmo, we have a woven gold vamp that’s a force to be reckoned with, while Kirkwood maintains his hard knock, leatherhead inspiration with the slick platform, oversized dolly strap sample.

*Check out The Shoe Dish tomorrow for separate features on both Nicholas Kirkwood and Alejandro Ingelmo; the designers to watch for Spring 2009!

As you well know, shoedish has had a tumultuous relationship with Steve Madden for some time now, but as love and hate goes, we are beginning to forgive and forget. To help calm the storm, we’ve been supporting and even promoting the recent fall boot collection at SM. Even though we think a boot costing upwards of $200 is a bit much to ask of the average Steve Madden customer, we’re thinking these pretty buckled up knee-highs might be worth their sale price when that bargain occurs. An item to watch? Perhaps. While you’re waiting for that, head to Steve Madden today and check out their super deal extravaganza going on TODAY ONLY! Steve Madden is offering FREE SHIPPING TODAY, Wednesday September 24th. Combine this promotion with your SAVE20 code for an additional 20% off your entire order! This offer is for TODAY ONLY. Offer ends at 11:59pm ET.
FREE SHIPPING from Steve Madden 9/24 ONLY. Also use code SAVE20 for 20% off your order!
