terrible tuesday: chinese laundry

Originally uploaded by shoedish

Ah! Call us crazy, but ew! Is it just us or are these patchwork, hidden platform pumps just yucky? There was a time when we liked patchwork footwear, in fact, we once had a pair of patchwork clogs. That’s right, my shoe friends, we worked the patchwork clogs. Actually, we wouldn’t normally be opposed to patchwork in general, except when it’s paired with a wrapped-vamp hidden platform design and finished with this bizarre cross between a peeked-toe and almond-toe that is becoming an unfortunate fashion trend for future seasons. All in all, this shoe is resembling something that an oompa loompa might wear to the backhouse. We might actually like these if they did some renovation to that awkward toe and removed the platform altogether, but that’s just us. Thoughts? If you happen to like these shoes, you’ll be happy to know that they’re currently half-off at Macy’s; the lowest price of the holiday season.

the pierre hardy flame heel

Originally uploaded by shoedish

It’s the Pierre Hardy flame shoe fully realized! We mentioned this shoe a few months back during a runway preview for upcoming styles and designs and now the shoe has hit the stores. We loves!!! Multi-colored and multi-figured come together to form an energy of structure, style, and design. Here’s an example of architecturally sound shoes with a sexy uniqueness. Just a few posts ago, we were talking about how luxury designers are lowering their prices in the US and then we look through all the retail prices for the upcoming spring collections and have to wonder where these news sites are getting their information. The average mean of luxury label shoes used to be between $400 and $600, but the Fall 2008 and Winter 2009 collections are creeping toward the $800 and $1,000 range, while Spring 2009 is seeing shoes marching toward $1,500. Jeepers, creepers, where’d you get those materials? These Pierre Hardy stilettos are beautiful, but at a whopping $1,280, they’ll never meet our blue collar shoe brood.

wedding ’savvy’ by dikuza

Originally uploaded by shoedish

Shoedish always imagines that if she ever gets married, she’ll be wearing a short dress and fabulous colorful heels to do it. The reason for the short dress is that it’s sort of a signature of our style. Besides the fact that we like short dresses, we also think the shoes, not the dress, is the most important part of our nuptial-day outfit. A long gown will only cover the shoes up and we wouldn’t want that. Now, besides the fact that we have always fantasized about colored shoes, like red, green, or some fantasy version of this tattoo-style shoe we’ve been dreaming up, these Swarovski jewel-embellished heels from Dikuza would be a consideration. We hate that cliche prom-like pump that women always get stuck wearing on their wedding days and these are a little more fabulous than the traditional bleh! We’d say that we’d have them dyed, but that just brings up all those awful prom cliches once again.

designer brands slash prices

Does lowering the price on designer brands at retail devalue the luxury brand label? That’s what economist are wondering after news of luxury brands like Christian Louboutin, Chloe, and Versace are slashing prices on their goods up to 10% in the US. Uhhhh, call us crazy, but we don’t think that 10% off a pair of Christian Louboutin pumps, valued around $500+, is going to send any stilettos walking. Pretty sure that keeps them safely in the upper brackets of luxury. We always find it amusing to see 50% off sales on designer shoes and clothes that are still so far out of our price range that we wonder why we even bother. Will a Versace platform priced at $450 rather than $500 encourage you to consume this holiday season? The dollar has increased in value on the euro, gas prices are down, and now designer shoes are cheaper!!!! Well, looks like all our problems are solved.

*For anyone about to send a nasty email; that was a joke.

For more on the recent slash in prices, read this great article from The Wall Street Journal and New York Magazine.

celebrity shoe star: camilla belle

Originally uploaded by shoedish

We thought this was going to be a hard one and we even considered giving some hints, but the celebrity Shoe Star is…actress Camilla Belle. Here’s a cute newcomer to The Shoe Dish celebrity rounds. You may remember her from When a Stranger Calls or 10,000 BC, or she may be more easily recognized by the recent tabloid news of her hooking up with the Jonas brother that broke up with young country crooner, Taylor Swift, over the phone. What we love about Camilla Belle is obviously her shoe collection, but it seems she may be as genuinely sweet as the various rumors indicate. She’s got good friends Cameron Diaz and Maria Sharipova on her side, which seems to be a good indication. Expect to see some big things from this young up-and-comer; the more fame she gets, the more shoes we’ll see!

trend watch: textured tights

Originally uploaded by shoedish

Shoedish worked as a waitress at TGIFridays while she was in college and the gig opened the door to all things figured, color, and funky when it came to knee-high socks and tights. It’s been a couple years since those days of Jack Daniel’s ribs, artichoke dip, and Hurricanes, but our love for school girl knee-highs and ridiculous tights has not diminished. This morning shoedish was reminiscing on her days at the neighborhood joint and decided that we might need to invest in some new textured tights. With the colored opaque tight trend and tights with peep-toes, we’ve found ourselves in an overload of solid colored tights. From Christmas red to neon green, we have every color of opaque tight in the book, but our textured tight collection - you know that sexy Parisian boudoir élan of lace and vertical striped hosiery - has fallen to the wayside. Our old regulars would be so disappointed if they could see us now. I can just here the old mantra ringing out. “Where’s your flair?”
